Churches and monasteries of Tver
Sightseeing tour around most outstanding Tver churches. (2-2,5 hours).
During this excursion you will see the White Trinity church, Voznesenskaya church, St. Catherine nunnery, Uspensky Cathedral of Otroch monastery, etc.
The White Trinity Church is the oldest building in Tver made of stone (1564). In the church you can see the iconostasis of the 18th century and wall-painting (the end of 18th – the middle of 19th centuries).
Voznesenskaya church was built in the middle of the 18th century, but in the 19th century the church was reconstructed according to the style of late classicism by the project of architect I.F. Lvov.
The Church of Great Martyr Catherine in St. Catherine Nunnery was built instead of a wooden church in 1774-1781 at the confluence of the river Volga and the river Tvertza. The ensemble and decoration of the church combine baroque style and ancient Russian style.
The Assumption cathedral (1722) along remained nowadays from the impressive ensemble of Otroch Uspensky monastery (founded in 1265, destroyed in the 1930th). In the 16th century monk Maxim Greck and Metropolitan Philipp were imprisoned in the monastery. Here Maluta Skuratov suffocated Metropolitan Philipp by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1569.
Besides there is a mosque, a Roman Catholic church and a synagogue in Tver.
